This program allows you to enter basic uucp configuration information
for the Sysfiles, Devices, Systems, Permissions, Poll, Dialcodes 
and Dialers files.  You may reuse this program again and again to make
adjustments to the same files.

When uucpadm is started, it reads all of the target files
from disk into memory.  All changes are made to the memory image.
Actual updating of the files occurs only when the user enters
a CNTR U or CNTR X at the appropriate menu.

If uucpadm detects an inconsistency within the uucp files a
warning message is displayed on the menu. A '?' entered for
any menu component causes help information for that component
to be displayed. A '~' entered for any menu component invokes
the editor on the appropriate uucp file.

If you are configuring uucp for the first time the Devices, Systems
and Permissions files MUST be updated with your local network
information. Select the ADD/CHANGE option for the Devices, then
the Systems and finally the Permissions file from the master menu.
Request help (by entering a '?') at the first entry of each of  
these menus. These help screens will provide examples for completing
entries in each of the files.  You do not need to configure the
Sysfiles file unless you desire to use configuration files other
than the defaults.

On each menu an 'enter' will move you down the selections. If your
entry for the first item on the menu matches an existing record
then uucpadm will retrieve that record for update. uucpadm will
also tell you how many records with that first entry exist. Secondary
records should only exist for the Devices file. Secondary records
are edited by paging through the menu. After the final menu entry, 
uucpadm will prompt with "to next entry?". An affirmative response
retrieves the next record for update. A negative response continues the
editing of the current record. An affirmative response at the final 
record allows you to ADD another secondary record.
type|
The Devices file contains profiles of all the physical devices which
uucp may use to establish a connection with a remote host.

Type: Indicates the type of the communications device. Several
keywords are recognized. These are:

	* "Direct" - indicates that this device is a direct link
	  to another computer. Enter 'Direct' for type.

	* "ACU" - indicates that this device is an automatic call
	  unit (such as an autodial modem). Enter 'ACU' for type.

	* Built-in or standard function - indicates that the device
	  is a built-in function (such as "TCP") or a standard function
	  whose name appears as a first field entry in the Dialers
	  file (such as "develcon"). Enter 'TCP' for type.

	* System-Name - indicates that this device is a direct link to
	  a particular computer. In this case, System-Name should be 
	  replaced with the machine's uucp node name. This name must 
	  appear as a third field entry in the Systems file. If you 
	  do not enter Direct, ACU or TCP then uucpadm assumes you have
	  entered a System-Name or standard function. uucpadm then
	  checks the Systems and Dialers file for consistency.
	  Enter System-Name for type.

*EXAMPLES*

To configure a hayes 1200 baud modem connected to /dev/tty1:
	Type = ACU
	line1 = tty1
	line2 = -
	class = 1200
	dialers = hayes

To configure a direct 9600 connection to machine "lance" on /dev/tty2:
	Type = lance
	line1 = tty2
	line2 = -
	class = 1200
	dialers = direct

To configure uucp for a TCP connection:
	Type = TCP
	line1 = -
	line2 = -
	class = -
	dialers = TCP

*WARNINGS*
	   
"Type entry not found in Systems or Dialers" - your entry for type
was not a recognized function (ACU,Direct or TCP). A check of
/etc/uucp/Systems & /etc/uucp/Dialers did not locate a
cross entry for type. You should add a cross entry to one of these files

"make certain uucpd is enabled" - You entered TCP for type which requires the
daemon process, /etc/uucp/uucpd, to be enabled. You accomplish this by
uncommenting the appropriate lines in /etc/rc.tcpip and reinitializing the
system.

"/dev/line1(line2) not found" - your entry for line1 or line2
implied that the device was attached to /dev/line1(line2). A check
of /dev did not locate the device. Run "devices" to add the device.

"Bad format to class entry" - your class entry contained more than one
character. Restrict class names to one character. 

"Dialer entry not found in Dialers" - your dialers entry did not have
a cross entry in /etc/uucp/Dialers. You should add the cross entry.

"entry not correct when type is TCP" - see examples for correct TCP
values.
nameS|
The Systems file delineates each machine in your UUCP network. UUCP 
communications to/from a remote host will not be permitted unless
a Systems file entry exists for that host. (This is true except when
remote.unkown is configured to permit access by unknown hosts).

Name: This field should be set equal to the uucp node name of the
remote host. In general, this name can be obtained by entering the
command "uname -n". The node name can be set through the "uname  
-Smyhost.node.name" command. Uncommenting this command line in 
"/etc/rc.include" configures the uucp node name at boot time.

*EXAMPLES*

To enter the system lance.ibm.com which is connected with
an ACU device in class 2400 (see Devices). Calls are permitted at
any time. The uucp login on lance.ibm.com is nuucp & the nuucp
password is "saysme":
	Name = lance.ibm.com

	Type = ACU
	Class = 2400
	Phone = 997-7942
	Login = nuucp

To enter the system backwoods which is connected with a TCP device. 
Calls are permitted only on weekdays between 9am-5pm. The uucp login on

"Multiple entries exist with this system name" - uucpadm found multiple
records in /etc/uucp/Systems with this system name. Delete the 
multiple entries with uucpadm or with the editor.

"Invalid Time entry. Valid portion displayed." - Your time entry is
 invalid. uucpadm will display accepted section of entry. Read help.

"Type entry not found in Devices" - You specified a communications
link which is not in /etc/uucp/Devices. A Devices entry MUST be constructed.

"Type & Class entries not found in Devices" - You specified a
communications link which is not in /etc/uucp/Devices. A Devices entry MUST be
constructed which matches BOTH your Type and Class entries.

"Type is not ACU" - You entered a phone # for a non-ACU device.

"Dialcode entry not found in Dialcodes." You entered a dialcode 
abbreviation not found in /etc/uucp/Dialcodes. Construct the
Dialcodes entry.
systemP|
The Poll file specifies machines in your uucp network to be polled.
Each entry contains the name of the machine to be polled plus the
hours the machine should be called.

System: This field should be set equal to the short node name of the
remote host to be polled. This name can be obtained by entering the
command "uname -n". The node name can be set through the "uname  
-Smyhost.node.name" command. Uncommenting this command line in 
"/etc/rc.include" configures the uucp node name at boot time.

*EXAMPLES*

To enter the system lance.ibm.com which is to be polled at
12pm 9am 1pm & 6pm.

	System = lance.ibm.com
	Hours = 0 9 13 18

*WARNINGS*

"Multiple entries exist with this system name" - uucpadm found multiple
records in /etc/uucp/Poll with this system name. Delete the 
multiple entries with uucpadm or with the editor.

"System entry not found in Systems" - You specified a machine name
which is not in /etc/uucp/Systems. A Systems entry MUST be
constructed.

"Ined will destroy Poll file. Use another editor" - You selected the
ined editor which removes tab characters. Tabs are the delimit   
character in /etc/uucp/Poll. Select another editor.
abr|
The Dialcodes file specifies dialcode abbreviations to be used
in the phone # entry of the Systems file (see Systems). Each
entry has the form of: abbreviation dialcode.

Abr: This field should be set equal to the dialcodes abbreviation.

*EXAMPLES*

To enter LA as the abbreviation for the Los Angeles area code, enter
"LA" at the Abr prompt and the desired dialcode at the Dialcode: prompt
as follows:

	Abr: LA
	Dialcode: 1-213-

*WARNINGS*

"Multiple entries exist with this dialcode" - uucpadm found multiple
records in /etc/uucp/Dialcodes with this dialcode. Delete the 
multiple entries with uucpadm or with the editor.

lmP|
The Permissions file specifies options for machine access, file access
and command execution which take effect when a remote host logs into
your machine or when you log into a remote host. 

L/M: This entry must be either LOGNAME=(login) or MACHINE=(short node
name). If LOGNAME is entered then permissions are being defined
which will take effect when a remote host enters this login id. ALL
REMOTE LOGIN IDS MUST HAVE A (ONE) PERMISSIONS FILE ENTRY. If MACHINE is
entered then permissions are being defined which will take effect when
you login to the remote host. When LOGNAME= is entered uucpadm issues
a warning if the login id does not exist. When MACHINE= is entered uucpadm
issues a warning if no Systems file entry exists for the node name.

*EXAMPLES*

The login id to be entered is uucpz. Remote hosts using this id may
REQUEST to receive files on login and your host may SEND queued work
when requested. The id may read all files with "other" permissions
and may write all files, except those in /etc, with "other" permissions.
If the remote machine is "lance" or "backwoods" it must utilize this
id : 
	L/M: LOGNAME=uucpz
	Request: yes
	Sendfiles: yes
	Read: /
	Write: NOWRITE=/etc
	Callback:
	Commands:
	Validate: lance:backwoods

The machine id to be entered is lance. When calling this host 
REQUESTs can be made for file transfers. Enable reading and
writing of all files, except those in /etc. Permit the execution

"L/M must start with LOGNAME= or MACHINE=" - These strings are required.

"Multiple entries exist with for LOGNAME or MACHINE " - uucpadm found
multiple records in /etc/uucp/Permissions for this LOGNAME or 
MACHINE. Delete the multiple entries with uucpadm or with the editor.

"MACHINE entry not found in Systems" -  A check of /etc/uucp/Systems
did not locate your entry for MACHINE. You should add a cross entry to
this file.

"LOGNAME entry not found" - Your LOGNAME user id was not found in /etc/passwd.
You should execute "adduser" to create the remote login id.

"Sendfiles ignored with MACHINE entries" - You entered a sendfiles entry
with MACHINE=. In this case, the sendfiles option has no impact on UUCP.

"Callback not valid with MACHINE entry" - You entered a callback entry
 with MACHINE=. uucpadm issues a warning and ignores the entry.

"Commands not valid with LOGNAME entry" - You entered a commands entry
 with MACHINE=. uucpadm issues a warning and ignores the entry.

"Validate not valid with MACHINE entry" - You entered a validate entry
 with MACHINE=. uucpadm issues a warning and ignores the entry.
line1|
Line1: Specifies the device name associated with this entry. For
an auto-dial modem attached to "/dev/tty1" you would enter "ACU"
for Type and "tty1" for Line1. For a direct connection through
"/dev/tty3" enter "tty3" for Line1. If this field is not relevant
(i.e. when Type is "TCP") use a "-" as a placeholder. When Type
is not equal to "TCP", uucpadm checks /dev for the existence of
Line1. If Line1 is not found a warning message is issued.
 
line2|
Line2: Specifies the device name associated with a dialer. 
This field would be used when connecting a modem which does not
contain a dialer. In this example, Type would be "ACU", Line1
would be the modem line and Line2 would be the dialer line.
For a dialer attached to "/dev/tty3" you would enter "tty3"
for Line2. If this field is not relevant (i.e. usually) use a
"-" as a placeholder. When Type is not equal to "TCP", uucpadm
checks /dev for the existence of Line2. If Line2 is not found a
warning message is issued.
classd|
Class: When "ACU" or "Direct" is Type, then Class is the speed
of the device. For a 1200 baud modem you would enter "ACU" for
type and "1200" for Class. This field may contain a letter and
speed (C1200) to distinquish between classes of devices. A match
is performed between this field and the fourth (Class) field of
the Systems file to determine which class of device to use when
connecting to a particular system. The keyword "Any" is also
an acceptable Class. Use this when the device can be used at any speed.
If "Any" is entered then the speed requested in the Systems file
will be employed. If the both Devices & System file entries are
"Any" the speed is defaulted to 1200. 
dialersd|
Dialers: This is actually a dialer-token pair field where the token
is optional. If the token is missing, it is obtained from the Systems
file. If the device is a direct connection to another machine
then enter "direct". In all cases, dialers should match to a
record in the Dialers file. If the device is an automatic dialing
modem then dialers will normally be the name of modem (i.e. penril,
hayes. . .). uucpadm checks the Dialers file for the existence of
dialers. If dialers is not found a warning message is issued.
timeS|
Time: This field defines the day-of-week & time-of-day that a remote
host may be called. Day-of-week must be a list drawn from the following
options: Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa Wk Any Never (Wk = any weekday, Any = 
any day, Never = never). Time-of-day must specify a numeric range such
as: 0100-2200. This would permit calls from 1am to 10pm. A subfield
specifying retry time after a call failure is also permitted. This
subfield is entered after a ";". For example, Wk;5 would allow calls
on any weekday and set a wait period of 5 minutes after failed attempts.
uucpadm checks the validity of this entry according to these rules. If
an error is found, uucpadm displays a message & the valid portion of the
entry.
typeS|
Type: Indicates the type of the communications link to the remote host.
This entry must match a type entry in the Devices file (see Devices).
uucpadm checks the Devices file for the existence of the device type. A
warning message is issued if the device is not found.
classS|
Class: Indicates the class of the communications link to the remote host.
This entry must match a class entry in the Devices file (see Devices).
uucpadm checks the Devices file for the existence of the device type &
class. A warning message is issued if the device & class is not found.
phoneS|
Phone: Provides the phone number of remote hosts linked through ACU
devices. Any alphabetic abbreviations MUST match an entry in the
Dialcodes file (see Dialcodes). An "=" indicates that a secondary
dial tone must be received before dialing the remaining digits. A "-"
dictates a 4 second pause before dialing the next digit. If type is
not equal to ACU and phone is not equal to "-" a warning message is
issued.
loginS|
login: Delineates the login information for the remote host. You
should enter the uucp login name. If the uucp login is "nuucp" 
enter: "nuucp". UUCP treats this field as an expect-send sequence.
uucpadm will prefix the entered name with an appropriate expect
string. This prefix may be altered by adding the record and then
retreiving the record in change mode. The expect prefix is
normally: "in:--in:" which tells UUCP to expect (log)in: from the
remote host. If UUCP receives this string then it will send the login
name (nuucp). The "--in:" tells UUCP to send nothing followed by a new
line and expect a second (log)in: when the first (log)in: is not received.
passwdS|
Password: Delineates the login password for the remote host. You
should enter the uucp login password. UUCP treats this field as an
expect-send sequence. uucpadm will prefix the entered name with an
appropriate expect string. This prefix may be altered by adding the
record and then retreiving the record in change mode. The expect prefix is
normally: "word:" which tells UUCP to expect (pass)word: from the
remote host. If UUCP receives this string then it will send the password.
request|
Request: This option specifies whether or not a remote host
can request file transfers when the remote initiated the UUCP
connection. Valid values are "yes" or "no". Request may be entered
with either LOGNAME or MACHINE.
sendfiles|
Sendfiles: When a remote host logs into your machine it may attempt
to receive work queued for it. The sendfiles option specifies whether
this request will be allowed. Valid values are "yes" or "no". Sendfiles
is ignored with a MACHINE entry and uucpadm issues a warning in this
case.
read|
Read: This option specifies read access to the file system. Read may
be entered with either LOGNAME or MACHINE. The entry "/" specifies
access to the entire file system with "other" permissions. Multiple
entries should be separated with a ":". To allow read access to /usr/bin
& /bin you would enter "/usr/bin:/bin". To permit read access to all
files EXCEPT those in /etc enter "NOREAD=/etc". uucpadm
prepends "READ=" to your entry unless "NOREAD=" is the first seven 
characters of your entry.
write|
Write: This option specifies write access to the file system. Write may
be entered with either LOGNAME or MACHINE. The entry "/" specifies
access to the entire file system with "other" permissions. Multiple
entries should be separated with a ":". To allow write access to /u/pat
& /usr/tmp you would enter "/u/pat:/usr/tmp". To permit write access to
all files EXCEPT those in /etc & /bin enter "NOWRITE=/etc:/bin". 
uucpadm prepends "WRITE=" to your entry unless "NOWRITE=" is
the first eight characters of your entry.
callback|
Callback: This option specifies that no transactions will occur until
the calling host is called backed. Valid entries are yes and no.
The Callback option should be entered only for LOGNAME records.
uucpadm issues an error when it is entered with MACHINE entries. 
IF TWO HOSTS HAVE CALLBACK SET FOR EACH OTHER NO CONVERSATIONS WILL
EVER COMPLETE.
commands|
Commands: When uux is invoked it generates remote execution requests
which are then transfered to the target host for execution. The Commands
option is used with MACHINE entries to specify the set of permitted
commands. uucpadm issues a warning message and ignores Commands
for LOGNAME entries. Multiple entries should be separated with a ":".
To allow the commands rmail & diff you would enter "rmail:diff". The
key word ALL specifies that all commands accessible to a local user
with "other" permissions are permitted. Use this option with care.
(see also Validate). 
validate|
Validate: This option should be utilized only for LOGNAME entries.
Validate specifies remote hosts which MUST enter the LOGNAME id
to login. The purpose is to require remotes which have extensive
command access (i.e. COMMANDS=ALL in their MACHINE entry) to use
restricted logins. Multiple hosts should be separated with a ":".
To force validation on lance & backwoods you would enter "lance:backwoods".
uucpadm issues an error message and ignores the input when Validate
is entered with MACHINE entries.
hours|
Hours: The hours (0-24) for polling.
dialcode|
Dialcodes: The dialing sequence substituted for the abbreviation (abr)
when the abr string is encountered in the Systems phone # field.
service|
Sysfiles provides a means of specifying different Systems, Devices and
Dialers files for uucico and cu in the file /etc/uucp/Sysfiles.  See the
comments in the Sysfiles file for example entries.  You may enter a
tilde (~) at the Sysfiles Maintenance screen to invoke the default
editor on this file.


Service: This option designates which Basic Networking service you wish
to modify.  This field can be set to "cu" or "uucico".  Any other entry
will cause a warning message to be displayed and uucpadm will continue 
awaiting valid input.
systems|
Systems: This option reflects which file(s) will be used as Systems file(s)
for the service you specified (cu or uucico).  This entry consists of
filenames separated by colons.  The following sample entry
specifies two Systems files;  one named "Systems.cico, and the second
corresponding to the normal default, "Systems."

Systems.cico:Systems

The file listed first will be referenced before following files.

You may include a full path name for each file you specify.  Filenames
which are not preceeded by a path name will default to the /etc/uucp
directory.
devices|
Devices: This option reflects which file(s) will be used as Devices file(s)
for the service you specified (cu or uucico).  This entry consists of
filenames separated by colons.  The following sample entry
specifies two Devices files;  one named "Devices.cico, and the second
corresponding to the normal default, "Devices."

Dialers file he/she would like to modify.  Type in  a filename and press
the enter key.  The Uucp Dialers Maintenance screen then will be displayed 
to allow the user to manipulate the file he/she specifies here.  If a 
Dialers filename is not preceeded by an explicit path, the location of
the file will default to the /etc/uucp directory.

The filenames listed are the filenames listed in /etc/uucp/Sysfiles
as dialers configuration files.  The user may enter one of these filenames
at the prompt or enter the name of a non-existent file.  If the user 
specifies the name of a non-existent file, a file will be created with the 
desired name if permissions permit. (i.e. if a pathname is supplied to 
a writable directory).  If the user specifies an unwritable file/directory

dodialers|
Each line in a Dialers file consists of three parts:

 1. The name of the dialer (modem type).
	
 2. The Substitute sequence is used to translate any '=' and - characters 
    contained in the phone number string from the Systems file.  The
    equals sign ('=') is used in a phone number to indicate a wait 
    for a secondary dial tone.  The dash ('-') is used to indicate a 
    pause (4 seconds, normally).  This field specifies how these 
    characters are translated into characters which a specific 
    dialer (modem) can recognize.  Enter a question mark with your
    cursor positioned on the Substitute sequence line for further help.

 3. The Expect-send sequence reflects a sequence of character exchanges
    between the software executing the dialing script and the dialer itself.
    The following example sequence reflects that the string  "AT" should
    be sent to the modem, to which the modem responds with an "OK".  The
    ATDT5551212 string will then be sent to the modem.  The  modem should
    then respond with "CONNECT".

    AT OK ATDT5551212 CONNECT
substitute|
    The Substitute sequence is used to translate any '=' and - characters 
    contained in the phone number string from the Systems file.  The
    equals sign ('=') is used in a phone number to indicate a wait 
    for a secondary dial tone.  The dash ('-') is used to indicate a 
    pause (4 seconds, normally).  This field specifies how these 
    characters are translated into characters which a specific 
    dialer (modem) can recognize.  This field consists of an even number
    of characters (up to 4).  The first character is translated into 
    the second character and the third character, if any, is translated 
    into the fourth when the dialing is carried out.  The following example 
    sequence will cause the equals sign ('=') to be converted to a plus

    The Expect-send sequence reflects a sequence of character exchanges
    between the software executing the dialing script and the dialer itself.
    The following example sequence reflects that the string  "AT" should
    be sent to the modem, to which the modem responds with an "OK".  The
    ATDT5551212 string will then be sent to the modem.  The  modem should
    then respond with "CONNECT".

    A null string can be represented by a pair of double quotes.  The
    following example sequence reflects that a null string should be
    be sent to the modem, to which the modem should not respond with
    any reply.  Subsequently, the the string  "AT" should be sent to 
    the modem, to which the modem responds with an "OK".  The
    ATDT\T string will then be sent to the modem.  The  modem should
    then respond with "CONNECT".  The meaning of \T is described
    below.

    A number of escape characters can be specified in the Expect-send
    string.  Their meanings are as follows:

      \p - pause (approximately 1/4-1/2 second delay)
      \d - delay (2 seconds)
      \D - phone number/token
      \T - phone number with Dialcodes and character translation
      \N - null byte
      \K - insert a BREAK
      \E - turn on echo checking (for slow devices)
      \e - turn off echo checking
      \r - carriage return
      \c - no new-line
      \n - send new-line
      \s - send space
      \nnn - send octal number
