It contains service hints and errata information about the maintenance package. This memo covers Diagnostics version 5.3.0.30 and its supporting documentation. The information in this memo is divided into several sections. The sections are: - Service Manual's Errata Information This section contains errata information for the service guides. - Service Hints for Problems This section contains hints and actions that may be useful in diagnosing problems. - Diagnostic Information This section contains information about the Diagnostic programs that are not included in the service manuals. - Installation Information This section contains installation information that is not included in the service manuals. - Engineering Change (EC) Information This section contains information about Diagnostic ECs. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Service Manual's Errata Information.............................3 None Service Hints For Problems......................................3 None Diagnostic Information..........................................3 Running Online Diagnostics on Version 5.3.0.30................3 Firmware needed to Run 5.3.0.0 & above Standalone Diagnostics.4 Enhancements Supported by Diagnostics Version 5.3.0.30........5 Installation Information........................................7 None Engineering Change (EC) Information.............................7 None 3 SERVICE MANUAL'S ERRATA INFORMATION ----------------------------------- None SERVICE HINTS FOR PROBLEMS -------------------------- None DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION ---------------------- Running Online Diagnostics on Version 5.3.0.30 To run Online Diagnostics, the bos.diag package must have been previously installed. The packages for the devices that you wish to test should also have been installed. If a device does not show up in the test list or you think that a device's Diagnostic package may not have been loaded, you can check by using the lscfg command. At an AIX prompt, type lscfg. If the device which you were wanting to test has a '+' or '-' preceding its name, the package was loaded. If the device has a '*' in front of its name, it means that the device is not testable by diagnostics. 4 Firmware needed to Run 5.3.0.0 & above Standalone Diagnostics If the system was release prior to 2004, then update the system firmware to the most recent available level in order to boot 5.3.0.0 & above levels of standalone diagnostics. Systems listed should be updated with the firmware image listed prior to booting standalone diagnostics versions 5.3.0.0. and above (higher firmware levels are acceptable). This is not a complete list. Alternatively, standalone diagnostics version 5.2.0.30 or 5.2.0.35 will run on supported systems at a firmware level lower than this minimum firmware level listed. These location codes can be identified by the presence of a unit identifier that is composed of the machine type, model and serial number. For example, a system with machine type 9117, model 250, and serial number 10-ABCDE will have location codes that begin with the string "U9117.250.10ABCDE". In addition, some of the physical location code standard prefixes are different for the new format physical location codes than for the "shorter format" physical location codes. Systems introduced in August 2004 and later will use this new format physical location code. Systems introduced prior to August 2004 will use the existing "shorter format" physical location codes. See the "Diagnostic Numbers and Location Codes" chapter in the service documentation for more information. The new format physical location codes are shown in diagnostics level 5.2.0.30 and higher. For these new format physical location codes, most diagnostic menus will have a slightly different format. The biggest difference is the resource selection menu. It will show the unit identifier only once for each unit or enclosure, with each of the resources in that unit or enclosure listed immediately following the unit identifier. - Automatic Error Log Analysis and Notification service aid. This service aid contains functions taken from the Periodic Diagnostics service aid. These functions include the ability to configure an error notification mailing list and to disable or enable automatic error log analysis. Systems or partitions containing only virtual or shared processors will not display the Periodic Diagnostics service aid. - Update and Manage System Flash Task. This task validates a new system firmware flash image and uses it to update the system temporary flash image. This task can also be used to validate a new system firmware flash image without performing an update, commit the temporary flash image, and reject the temporary flash image. For systems that support the Update and Manage System Flash Task, this task appears in place of the Update System and Service Processor Flash Task. On Power 5 systems with an HMC, this task may not appear on the task list; on these systems use the HMC to update system flash. - Diagnostics support for IDE DVD-RAM. The IDE DVD-RAM Diagnostics service aid includes format, certify media, display microcode and download microcode. 6 - Support for loading microcode and supplemental media from optical media. - Running standalone diagnostics from CDROM media now permits removal of the diagnostics CDROM media from the optical media drive while running standalone diagnostics on systems or partitions with 256MB of memory or greater. This permits the use of the same optical media drive for loading both standalone diagnostics and microcode. - Support for self-configuring ATAPI optical devices. - The Configure Reboot Policy Task was updated to support the platform-auto-power-restart parameter for POWER 5 systems. 7 INSTALLATION INFORMATION ------------------------ None. ENGINEERING CHANGE (EC) INFORMATION ----------------------------------- None.
