Replacement Characters

When a character in the database character set is not in the client's character set, a character can be designated as the replacement character. For example, ? is the default replacement character for any character in the Vietnamese character set VN8MSWIN1258. In the Western European character set WE8ISO8859P15, ¿ is the default replacement character, but several local replacement characters are defined for specific Unicode characters. For example, Y is the replacement character for Ÿ.

Use the Default Replacement Character fields (LocalChar Value and LocalChar Glyph) for single-byte characters. Use the Default Multibyte Replacement Character fields for multibyte characters.
