Calendar Format

Choose the following calendar characteristics:

The first day of a calendar week varies by territory. For example, in the United States (TERRITORY=AMERICA), the first day of the calendar week is Sunday. In Germany (TERRITORY=GERMANY), the first day of the calendar week is Monday. When you choose the first day of the week, you can see the effect of the choice in the calendar example.

Dating by weeks is common in European countries. All 52 or 53 weeks of the year receive a number, with days of the week numbered 1 through 7, beginning with Monday. The ISO week date calendar designates week 1 of the year to be the week that contains the first Thursday, so that the week may be only partially in the new year. For example, the ISO week date for March 23, 2001 is 2001-W12-5. It is the 5th day (Friday) of week 12 of the year 2001.

Week date calendars can, alternatively, designate the first week of the year to be the first full week. When you choose between the ISO Week and the Non-ISO Week, you can see the effect of the choice in the calendar sample. If it represents January, you can see which week is considered to be the first week of the year.
