Trace Results - Components Page

Use this page to analyze the time spent processing a particular server-side component type. The types of server-side components include Servlet/JSP components, EJB components, and JDBC/SQL components. The content of this page will vary, depending upon the component type you select from the Trace Results - Overview page.

The content will also vary depending upon whether you are viewing the total time spent processing the component during the transaction or the time spent processing the component by a particular URL within the transaction.

General Usage Tips

Consider the following tips as you use this page to analyze the performance of the server components of your transaction.

Checking the URL Field

Before you begin using this page, check the Component Details section of the page and note the value of the URL field. If the URL field shows a specific URL, this page contains information about the performance of this component each time it was invoked by that specific URL.

On the other hand, if the URL field contains the string "All URLs," this page contains information about the performance of this component each time it was invoked by any URL throughout the entire transaction.

Understanding Total Time and Component Time

When you review the data in the Components List, consider the following table column definitions.

Column

Description

Total Time The total time spent processing the selected component and its child components. For example, the total time spent processing a servlet includes the time spent processing any EJB or JDBC/SQL components that were called by the servlet.
Component Time The total time, excluding the time spent processing child components. For example, the component time for a selected servlet would not include the time spent processing any EJB, JDBC/SQL, or other Servlet/JSP components that were called by the servlet.

Component-Specific Usage Tips

The following sections describe usage tips that apply only when you drill down to specific server component types.

Reviewing Servlet/JSP Components

For Servlet/Java Server Page (JSP) components, Enterprise Manager displays a table that lists the Servlets and JSPs that were processed by the current transaction or by the specific URL you selected from the Trace Results - Overview page. For each servlet or JSP, the table provides performance metrics that you can review to compare the performance with other servlets or to identify a particular servlet or JSP that may be acting as a performance bottleneck.

You can then click the name of the servlet or JSP to obtain an even more detailed breakdown of the total response time of the servlet or JSP, including the time spent making a JDBC connection to the database, and a breakdown of the time spent running specific SQL statements.

Reviewing EJB Components

For Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) components, Enterprise Manager displays a table that lists the EJBs that were processed by the current transaction or by the specific URL you selected from the Trace Results - Overview page. For each EJB, the table provides performance metrics that you can review to compare the performance with other EJBs to identify a particular EJB that may be acting as a performance bottleneck.

You can then click the name of the EJB to obtain more details including the time spent making a JDBC connection to the database, and a breakdown of the time spent running specific SQL statements.

Reviewing JDBC/SQL Components

For JDBC/SQL components, Enterprise Manager lists all the SQL components that were processed by the current transaction or by the specific URL you selected from the Trace Results - Overview page. For each SQL statement, the table provides performance metrics that you can review to compare the performance with other SQL statements to identify SQL statements that may be acting as performance bottlenecks.

You can then click the SQL component to obtain information about the context in which the SQL component was used. You can also click on the Details icon to drill down to the Database performance page for this SQL statement.
