Enabling SNMP Access to an F5 BIG-IP Load Balancer

Enable SNMP access to the switch by one of following methods:

Using the Web Interface for the Controller

To enable SNMP access using the Web interface:

  1. Use your browser to display the Web interface for the controller.

For most controllers, use a standard IP address or URL address to display the interface.

  2. Click System Admin.

  3. Click SNMP Administration.

  4. Ensure that Enable is selected, and Client Access is set to All.

  5. Make a note of the community string. This will be needed when adding the switch as an Oracle Enterprise Manager managed target.

  6. Click BIGPipe in the left navigation bar, and enter the following command:

    global open_snmp_port show

If the status is disabled, then enable access to the SNMP port by the entering the following command:

    global open_snmp_port enable

  7. If you made any changes, restart SNMP on the device.

To restart snmpd, use Telnet/SSH to connect to the switch as root user, and enter the following command:

    bigstart restart snmpd

Logging into the Controller Using Telnet/SSH

To enable SNMP access by logging into the Controller using Telnet/SSH:

  1. Verify the entry in the /etc/hosts.allow file.

The entry for bigsnmpd should read:

    bigsnmpd : ALL

To provide SNMP access to specific hosts, such as to the monitoring Agent only, then specify the IP addresses of those hosts in the /etc/hosts.allow file.

  2. Enable the SNMP port by entering the following command:

    bigpipe global open_snmp_port show

  3. If SNMP is disabled, enable it by entering the following command:

    bigpipe global open_snmp_port enable

  4. Restart snmpd by entering the following command:

    bigstart restart bigsnmpd
