A service can have one or more tests associated with it. These tests are used to monitor the service remotely and are used to determine the availability and performance of the service. There are various protocols you can use while defining the service test. Choose the one that is appropriate for your service.
DNS - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a DNS (Domain Name System) service.
Custom Script - Use this test to determine (via a custom script or executable) the availability and performance of a service.
FTP - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) service.
Web Transaction - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a Web application.
Forms Transaction - Use this test to monitor a Forms transaction and determine the availability and performance of a Forms application.
HTTP Ping - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a Web URL.
Host Ping - Use this test to determine the responsiveness of a network host via ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol).
IMAP - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of an IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) service.
JDBC SQL Timing - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) connection to a database.
LDAP -- Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) service.
NNTP - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) newsgroup service.
Oracle SQL Timing - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a connection to an Oracle database.
POP - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of a POP (Post Office Protocol) service.
Port Checker - Use this test to determine whether a network client can make connections to a set of ports on a given host.
SMTP - Use this test to determine the availability and performance of an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) service.
TNS Ping - Use this test to determine the responsiveness of a database via the TNS (Transparent Network Substrate) protocol.
You can define a single test while creating a service. The availability of the service is based on the test. If required, you can then specify additional tests for the service. Refer to Service Tests and Beacons Page for more information.
Depending on the test protocol you have selected, the parameters that you specify will vary.
You can later use the additional collected metrics as a basis for measuring the performance of the service.
