About the SMARTS Network Adapter

The SMARTS Network Adapter is a tool you can use to inform network administrators and others of application problems that may be caused by network issues, and if so, what those specific issues may be.

When Enterprise Manager detects problems that may be caused by the network, Enterprise Manager can dynamically query the SMARTS adapter for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) information related to suspected hosts or IP addresses. When RCA performs an analysis, it detects whether or not SMARTS has been installed and integrated, then polls the SMARTS adapter for information about the network infrastructure. The SMARTS adapter is configured with information about SNMP communities and all network hardware --such as routers, hubs, and switches -- and periodically polls those devices using SNMP, maintaining its own internal database of information about the devices. In the event of a service failure, the adapter not only identifies all problem areas, but can provide specific information about the main source of the problem based on the data in its internal database. For more information about adapter alerts see About Network Adapter Targets.

When RCA runs for a service accessing a SMARTS Network Adapter, information about the IP addresses of SMARTS-related components is provided to the RCA engine. During an outage, RCA taps into the information maintained by the SMARTS adapter and if the cause of the failure is specific to components monitored by the SMARTS adapter, the SMARTS target is highlighted RCA table of the home page. For more information about adapter alerts see About Network Adapter Alerts.

Configuring the Adapter

The SMARTS adapter is a script which the administrator must place in the Management Agent's scripts directory. To configure the adapter, the administrator must select a host/home in the network where a 10gR2 Management Agent is installed and running, and which can communicate with the SMARTS system. Once the script is in place and you have added the SMARTS Network Adapter target to Grid Control for the agent where the script is installed, Enterprise Manager tests the integration with SMARTS using a ping command through the script.
