About Network Adapter Targets

The status of the Network Adapter target should not be confused with the status of the network itself. You cannot use the network adapter target status to conclude that a switch or router is down. It is instead the status of the adapter itself which you can use to acquire information from SMARTS.  If the home page reports that the target is down, it is indicating that the integration with SMARTS (the adapter) is broken.

The adapter is a script (ic_oracle_cmd) provided by SMARTS that the administrator must place in the Management Agent's scripts directory. To configure the adapter, the administrator must select a host/home in the network where they have a 10gR2 Management Agent installed and running, and which can communicate with the SMARTS system. SMARTS provides details on the other side of the integration between the script and their software. Once the script is in place and you have added the SMARTS Network Adapter target to Grid Control for the Agent where the script is installed, the integration with SMARTS is tested using a ping command through the script. This then renders the status of the adapter target.
