Enterprise Manager's notification system allows you to notify administrators when metric severity conditions (metric thresholds) are met or exceeded, when policy violations occur, and when jobs change state. However, the notification system permits even greater flexibility and utility.
The notification system can, in addition to notifying administrators, automate responses to alerts by executing Java callbacks, operating system commands (including scripts) and PL/SQL procedures. This capability allows you to implement specific IT practices in response to specific alerts. For example, if an alert is generated when monitoring the operational (up/down) status of a database, you may want the notification system to automatically open an in-house trouble-ticket via an OS script so that the appropriate IT staff can respond in a timely manner.
By using SNMP traps, the Enterprise Manager notification system also allows you to invoke the functionality of SNMP-enabled third-party applications such as HP OpenView. Some administrators may want to send third-party applications a notification when a certain metric has exceeded a threshold.
Once you have created one or more Enterprise Manager administrators, you can begin defining actual notifications. Notifications are defined via Notification Methods and Notification Rules.
A notification method defines the devices used for sending notifications. These include e-mail, SNMP traps, Java callbacks, OS commands and scripts, and PL/SQL procedures. Once defined, these methods can then be used with Notification Rules for sending notifications to administrators as a result of alert occurrences. At least one notification method must exist before defining notification rules. See Managing Notification Methods.
Note: Only a privileged user can manage (create and/or edit) a notification method.
A notification rule is a set of conditions that determine when a notification occurs. Conditions include severity conditions (clear, warning, critical) based on the metrics of a target , policy violation conditions (clear, violation) based on the policies of a target, and changes in a job's status on a target that would trigger a notification. During notification rule creation, you can associate the rule with multiple notification methods. See Defining Notification Rules.
You can manage (create/edit/delete) notification methods independent of a notification rule.
