About Monitoring Templates

Monitoring templates simplify the task of setting up monitoring for large numbers of targets by allowing you to specify the monitoring and policy settings once and applying them as often as needed. You can save, edit, and apply these templates across one or more targets or groups. A monitoring template is specified for a particular target type and can only be applied to targets of the same type.

Definition of a Monitoring Template

A monitoring template defines all Enterprise Manager parameters you would normally set to monitor a target. A template specifies:

Monitoring templates can be applied to targets that are monitored by 10.1 or greater Management Agents. If the monitoring template contains new Grid Control features only supported by a more recent version of the Agent, the target must be monitored by that version Agent or greater. For example, if your template contains Grid Control 10.2 features such as disabled metric collection schedules or wildcard specification for monitored objects (for metrics), a version 10.2 or greater Management Agent is required.

Applying Monitoring Templates to Targets

As mentioned earlier, a monitoring template can be applied to one or more targets of the same target type, or to composite targets such as groups. For composite targets, the template is applied to all member targets that are of the appropriate type. Once a template is applied, future changes made to the template will not be automatically propagated to the targets: You must reapply the template to all affected targets.
