Adding Targets to be Monitored and Administered by Enterprise Manager

If you want to add targets to be monitored by Oracle Enterprise Manager, you must install an Oracle Management Agent on the host machine where the targets are located.

Automatic Target Discovery

Once an Oracle Management Agent is installed, the following targets are automatically added: The Management Agent itself, the host it is installed on, and any databases, listeners and Oracle AS servers that are also installed on the same host machine.

During autodiscovery, the targets located on the Oracle Management Agent machine are discovered and added to Enterprise Manager to be monitored and administered. Which targets are added automatically is dependent on how the Oracle Management Agent is installed.

Note: Autodiscovery occurs the first time the Management Agent starts. It does not occur every time the Management Agent starts.

Complete Enterprise Manager Install Options

If you have chosen the Complete Enterprise Manager with a database or Complete Enterprise Manager in an existing database top level install option, the host and Oracle Management Agent, and the following targets are added automatically if they are present on the host machine:

By default, an Oracle Management Agent is also installed when you install the Oracle Management Service and Management Repository (the Enterprise Manager middle tier). This Oracle Management Agent will discover at least the host and the Oracle Application Server and database that have been installed as part of the same install session.

During the Management Repository creation, two targets, the OMS and Repository target and Enterprise Manager Web Application target, are created to help monitor the overall health of Enterprise Manager.

Also, when you install an option that creates the Management Repository, notification rules are created for all supported targets regardless of what is discovered now or later. For information on default notification rules for availability and the targets they apply to, refer to About Default Notification Rules for Supported Targets.

Additional Management Service Install Option

If you have chosen the Additional Management Service top level install option, the host and Oracle Management Agent, and the following targets are added automatically if they are present on the host machine:

During the Management Service installation, the previously existing Enterprise Manager Web Application target is modified to include the additional Oracle Application Server instance used to deploy the new Management Service.

Additional Management Agent Install Option

If you have chosen the Additional Management Agent top level install option, the host and Oracle Management Agent, and the following targets are added automatically if they are present on the host machine:

Manually Adding Targets

If the automatically discovered targets do not include a target you want to monitor, you can manually add the target.

The methods for manually adding targets are documented below.

Adding a Target from the Targets Subtab

To add a target:

  1. From the Enterprise Manager Grid Control, click the Targets tab.

  2. Click the appropriate target subtab. Each subtab is filtered for adding of targets. For example, the Databases subtab will only let you add databases.

  3. Click Add.

Enterprise Manager displays the properties page or wizard for the target you have chosen to add. Click Help from the property page or wizard when adding targets to get more information.

Adding a Target from the All Targets Subtab

To add a target:

  1. In the Enterprise Manager Grid Control Console, click the Targets tab.

  2. Click the All Targets subtab.

  3. Access the Target Type list to left of Go button

Adding a Target from the Setup Tab

To add a target:

  1. In the Enterprise Manager Grid Control Console, click the Setup tab.

Note: Only certain privileged Enterprise Manager administrators will have access to the Management System tab. See About Privileges for Accessing the Management System Tab for more information.

  2. Click the Agents subtab to display a list of Oracle Management Agents installed in your enterprise.

  3. Select the Oracle Management Agent that is on the same machine as the target you want to add to the Grid Control Console. The Oracle Management Agent selected will be the Oracle Management Agent that will monitor the new target.

  4. Within the Monitored Targets section, choose a target type from the list next to the Add label and click Go.

Enterprise Manager displays the properties page or wizard for the target you have chosen to add. Click Help from the property page or wizard when adding targets to get more information.

For information about manually adding Oracle Collaboration Suite targets using Enterprise Manager Grid Control, see Oracle Enterprise Manager Managing Oracle Collaboration Suite on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) Web site. Performing Rediscovery of the Targets

If after installation and initial Oracle Management Agent target discovery, you add targets to the Oracle Management Agent machine and want Enterprise Manager to monitor these new targets, you have the option of manually adding them or running discovery again so that those targets not yet discovered can be discovered and shown in the Grid Control Console.

To perform rediscovery of the targets local to the Oracle Management Agent:

  1. On the Enterprise Manager Grid Control Console Home page, use the target search to find the Oracle Management Agent that is on the same machine as the target you want to add to the Grid Control Console. Use the drop-down list to limit the target search to a specify target type.

  2. Click Go.

Enterprise Manager will try to discover the targets not yet discovered on the host. If new targets are discovered, you can choose which targets you want to appear in the Grid Control Console.
