Enabling SNMP Access to the Filer

To enable SNMP access to the Filer, you can use one of two methods:

Using Telnet

To configure SNMP access to the Filer using a Telnet session:

  1. Start a Telnet session and then connect and log in to the Filer.

  2. Enter the following command to enable SNMP:

    % options snmp.enable on

  3. Enter the following command to obtain the community string and check the access rights assigned to the community string:

    % snmp community

The Filer software displays the access rights followed by the SNMP community string. The community string should have read-only access (ro) at the minimum.

  4. Note the community string.

You will need to provide it later when you add the Filer as a managed target.

  5. If necessary, configure the community string for read-only access by entering the following command:

% snmp community add ro <community_string>

Use of public as a community string is recommended.

  6. Optionally, enter the contact details of the person responsible for the Filer using the following command:

    % snmp contact <contact_details>

For example, enter the e-mail address and phone number of the contact person.

  7. Optionally, enter the physical location of the Filer using the following command:

    % snmp location <location_details>

For example, provide a location such as "Main Computer Lab."

Using Network Appliance FilerView

Network Appliance provides a Web application called FilerView that you can use to configure your Network Appliance Filer. To configure SNMP using the FilerView application:

  1. Point your browser to the following URL:

    http://<Filer_hostname>/na_admin

  2. Click FilerView in the left frame.

  3. If prompted, log in to the Filer.

The FilerView application appears in a new browser window.

  4. Click SNMP; then, click Configure.

  5. Select Yes from the SNMP Enabled list.

  6. Select Read-Only from the first list in the Communities table.

  7. Enter the desired community string in the first field in the table. Use of public as a community string is recommended.

Note: The text you enter here is the community string you will need later when you add the Filer as a managed target.

  8. Optionally, in the Contact field, enter the e-mail address or phone number of the person responsible for the Filer.

  9. Optionally, in the Location field, enter the physical location of the Filer.

For example, enter "Main Computer Lab."
