About the Status Icons

Enterprise Manager uses a standard set of icons to identify the availability of your managed targets and to identify whether or not performance metric thresholds have been crossed.

The following sections describe the Availability State icons and the Severity State icons that may appear next to managed targets or performance metric values:

Availability State Icons

These icons represent the availability status of a target.

Icon

State

Explanation

Agent Unreachable icon

Agent Unreachable

Indicates that the status of a target is unknown because the network is down, the Agent is unavailable, or the host on which the target resides is unavailable.

For more information, see About Management Agents.

Under Blackout icon

Under Blackout

Indicates that the target is under scheduled maintenance. Blackouts allow Enterprise Manager users to suspend any data collection activity. For more information, see About Blackouts.

Blackout time is not included when Enterprise Manager calculates the availability percentage for a target.

Metric Collection Error icon

Metric Collection Error

Indicates that there were problems collecting metric information. There may be a few situations wherein problems in the environment or configuration can cause problems in the metric collection. If this occurs, Enterprise Manager signals this with a metric error.

Investigate this issue by clicking the Management Systems tab and viewing the errors on the Errors subtab.

"Metric Error" is a state that does not occur for the Host and Agent.

Target Up icon

Up

Indicates that the target is up.

Target down icon

Down

Indicates that the target is down.

"Down" is a transient state for the Agent. For more information, see the explanation for "Agent Down."

"Down" is a state that does not occur for a host.

Target Up icon

Partially Up

Indicates that at least one of the instances in a cluster database is up and at least one instance is down.

The availability of a cluster database is given as a roll-up of all its instances; as long as one instance is up, the cluster database is considered available. This icon will normally be followed by text indicating the number of up instances. For example, (2 of 4 up) indicates that two of four total instances of the cluster database are up.

Agent down icon

Agent Down

Indicates that the Agent monitoring the target is "down."

The Agent is a "high availability" component. The "Agent Down" as a current status is rare. It occurs if:

  • The Agent is down and up again within a two minute cycle (heartbeat interval)

  • The Agent sends two severity records: "Agent Down" and "Agent Up"

  • The "Agent Down" status reaches the Management Service but there is a delay in sending the "Agent Up" status

  • During this state, all targets are in the "Agent Down" availability state and the Agent is in the "Down" availability state.

  • Status Pending icon

    Status Pending

Indicates a temporary state of the target when the Agent is still calculating its availability.

Status Pending time is not included when Enterprise Manager calculates the availability percentage for a target.

Status Pending is a transient state. It occurs in the following situations:

    • A target is newly added to Enterprise Manager while the Agent is calculating its availability state

    • After a metric error of a target, and the Agent is calculating its availability state

    • After the end of a Blackout of a target, and the Agent is calculating its availability state

    Severity State Icons

These icons are an indicators of a potential problems: a warning or critical threshold for a monitored metric has been crossed. Having these icons call your attention, you can act quickly to resolve the imminent and potential problems facing the target.

    Icon

     State

    Explanation

    Critical Alert icon

    Critical Alert

Indicates that a performance metric has exceeded a critical alert threshold. Investigate this alert immediately. If you ignore a critical alert, the system may shut down or crash.

    Warning Alert icon

    Warning Alert

Indicates that a performance metric has exceeded its warning threshold. This alert may indicate that you are approaching a critical alert threshold. The Warning alert forewarns of serious consequences if it is not dealt with in a timely manner.

Metric Within Threshold icon Metric within thresholds Indicates that a threshold has been defined for the selected performance metric, but the metric value is within limits and has not crossed the critical or warning threshold.
