Service Tests

This section shows a list of all service tests. You can create one or more service tests here.

  • Select a test protocol from the drop down list and click Add to add a service test. The Create Service Test page is displayed.

  • Once you have defined a service test, click Enable to enable it. If the test is not enabled, the beacons will not perform the service test.

  • After the test has been enabled, you can click Verify Service Test to verify the service test. The Verify Service Test page is displayed where you can select one or more beacons and execute the test.

  • The Status icon indicates the status of the service test i.e. whether it can be successfully executed by the key beacons. If there are no key beacons defined for the service, the status will be unknown even if there are other beacons executing the service test. Click Status to go to the Status History page.

  • You can add metrics for this test and define the critical and warning thresholds for the metrics. To do so, click on the Monitoring Settings link to go to the Metric and Policy Settings page.

Note: After creating and enabling the test, you can add to the list of key tests for the service. To do so, click on the Availability Definition link at the bottom of the page. The Availability Definition page is displayed where you can define the key tests for a service. For more information, refer to About Service Availability.

Beacons

You can create / add or remove a beacon here. When you add beacons, select beacons that represent locations on your internal network or on the Internet that are important to your e-business. These are typical locations where your end users are located. For example, if your business is in Canada and you have customers in the United States, use a beacon installed on a host computer in the United States to measure the availability and performance of your applications.

  • After adding the beacon, you need to select it so that it is used to execute this service test.

  • The Status icon indicates the status of the beacon. Click on the Status icon to go to the Status History page.

  • For a Web transaction, you can select a Local Beacon. You can then compare the performance of the service test run from each remote beacon against the local beacon.

Note: You can also navigate to the Agent Home page, create a beacon and specify its properties.

To make a beacon available on a remote host, install the Agent on the host. For more information see Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Installation and Basic Configuration.

For more information about how you can use the service tests and beacons to measure the performance and availability of your service, refer to About Service Availability and About Service Performance topics.
