Enterprise Manager is Oracle's single, integrated solution for administering and monitoring targets that are based on the Oracle technology stack.
This topic describes:
Advanced Configuration Tasks, which you can optionally perform for your management environment
Additional Tasks you may want to perform after the installation
At install time, the following tasks are performed automatically:
A default Super Administrator SYSMAN account is created with a password you specified during the install.
After installation, you can immediately log in to the Grid Control or the Database Control with this username and password to perform management tasks. The SYSMAN account owns the database schema containing the Management Repository.
The SYSMAN account is automatically configured to receive e-mail notifications from Enterprise Manager if, during install time, you specified the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server and SYSMAN's e-mail address.
Also, as part of the self-monitoring feature, a script is created that enables the user to be notified by e-mail in the rare case that Enterprise Manager goes down unexpectedly.
E-mail notifications are set up with default Notification Rules for the critical conditions that could occur for all supported target types.
For example, for the database target type, a rule is created such that e-mail notifications are sent when any database becomes unavailable, or if any of its key health metrics (Datafile Usage %, Archiver Hung Error Stack, Tablespace Space Used %, and others) becomes critical. The e-mail notifications will be sent to the e-mail address associated with the SYSMAN account. These rules are public so when other administrators are created later, they can subscribe to them.
The first time the Management Agent is started, many of the key targets located on the same host machine as the Management Agent are automatically discovered and default monitoring levels and data collections automatically enabled.
For example, Enterprise Manager discovers the Oracle Application Server, single instance Oracle Database, Management Service and Management Repository, Management Agent, and the Listener targets on the Management Agent host.
The Host, Database, Application Servers, Web Applications, Groups, and All Targets target subtabs are created. Target subtabs are categories of targets that provide immediate access to the targets you may want to access most often.
When you install the Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control, the installation procedure automatically creates a Web Application target for the Enterprise Application itself.
This allows you to monitor the Enterprise Manager Grid Control Web application and serves as an example of how you can use Web Application targets to monitor your J2EE applications.
While the above is the value you gain after an Enterprise Manager installation, you also have the choice to change the default values that Oracle Enterprise Manager set for you "out-of-box," perform more advanced configuration tasks, and customize Oracle Enterprise Manager further.
Specifying the outgoing mail server is a global configuration. For information on how each Enterprise Manager administrator can set his own e-mail address, refer to Setting the Password and E-mail Address for the Administrator Account.
For information on default notification rules for availability and the targets they apply to, refer to About Default Notification Rules for Supported Targets.
Changing Oracle Enterprise Manager's "out-of-box" values after the installation may include the following tasks:
Configuring notification methods and notification rules. Enterprise Manager's notification system allows you to notify administrators when metric severity conditions (metric thresholds) are met or exceeded. The notification system can, in addition to notifying administrators, automate responses to alerts by executing operating system commands (including scripts) and PL/SQL procedures.
Create additional Notification Methods if the default e-mail notification is not sufficient. When new administrators are created, they can immediately have access to the methods.
Review or edit default notification rules. For example: you may not want SYSMAN to receive notifications for all conditions, or you may want a method other than e-mail to be used
Performing advanced configuration tasks may include such activities as:
Enabling Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for Oracle Management Service.
Enabling Single On for the Oracle Management Service.
Enabling Advanced Security Option between the Oracle Management Service and Management Repository.
Configuring firewalls that exist between various components of Enterprise Manager.
Configuring Web Application Management (APM) if no webcache was enabled at install time.
Configuring the firewall to allow HTTP and ICMP traffic from the Oracle Management Agent if your Beacons must communicate across a firewall.
Because the installation does not automatically set these, you may want to:
Create administrators, other than the default SYSMAN, for daily administration work: make sure these Administrators reflect your management team, assign them roles/privileges to segregate their responsibilities, and ensure that no one shares an account. There should be no reason to create another Super Administrator account other than SYSMAN.
Create roles for accessing certain targets and for accessing specific management features. Roles are especially useful if there are several administrators that share similar responsibilities.
Create groups to logically organize your targets for effective management. You can later grant group access to administrators rather than individual target access.
In addition, after you have installed and performed some basic configuration tasks, you may want to:
Add additional targets to be monitored and administered by Enterprise Manager other than those discovered automatically. This activity may include the following tasks:
Installing an Oracle Management Agent on the host computers you want to manage.
Adding targets if starting the Oracle Management Agent did not automatically find the targets you want. There are wizards or property pages you must fill out for various target types.
